A Dental Bridge Can Often Restore a Tooth That Was Lost

August 25, 2017

If you struggle to maintain good oral hygiene habits, then your teeth are at increased risk of suffering a cavity. If you also have a bad habit of putting off your regular dental checkup with Dr. Madalina Iorgulescu an untreated cavity can grow large. In time it might compromise so much of the tooth that a severe fracture occurs.

In a case like this Dr. Madalina Iorgulescu might be able to treat a tooth by performing a root canal with a dental crown. Unfortunately, if the root of the tooth is severely or a large abscess has formed in the gums, she might recommend a total extraction. This can help ease the pain and prevent further infection.

When you’re ready, Dr. Madalina Iorgulescu can start the process of restoring the tooth with a dental bridge. This is one solid piece of dental work that replicates the appearance and function of the original tooth. It is fused to a pair of crowns on each end.

To properly anchoring the dental bridge in your mouth, Dr. Madalina Iorgulescu will need to create a pair of abutments. This is done by removing the entire tooth enamel layer from each of the surrounding teeth.

A detailed impression will be created of the two abutments and any related teeth in your dentition. It will be sent to a dental lab to guide technicians while they create your dental bridge. Temporary crowns will then be cemented over each abutment to protect it.

When your dental bridge is ready a member of Dr. Madalina Iorgulescu’s will call you to schedule a second appointment. This session will be brief. Dr. Madalina Iorgulescu will simply remove the temporary crowns and cement your dental bridge firmly onto the abutments.
