How Can Pregnancy Affect My Oral Health?

May 29, 2018

If you’re curious to know how your pregnancy can affect your teeth, gums and smile, then you have come to the right blog. The more you know about your pregnancy, oral health and smile, the better chance you have of avoiding problems and keeping your teeth and gums in tip-top shape. Today, our dentist, Dr. Madalina Iorgulescu, is happy to tell you how your pregnancy can affect your oral health. It can affect it by:

– Causing enamel erosion: Enamel erosion occurs when the acid from your vomit attacks the teeth and wears them down. This is very common if you have morning sickness. It can cause a weak smile and tooth cracks. It’s best to wait to brush your teeth at least 30 minutes after you throw up so you don’t make matters worse.

– Causing pregnancy gingivitis: Pregnancy gingivitis involves red, swollen and tender gums that bleed easily. Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease, and it’s important to treat it quickly. You can do so by attending your regular dental cleaning and exam appointment.

– Causing loose teeth: The progesterone and estrogen you produce can loosen the bones and ligaments that keep your teeth in place, according to the Mayo Clinic. If you experience loose teeth, it’s best to mention it to your dentist so treatment can be provided if necessary. However, this problem usually resolves itself after your pregnancy.

Because pregnancy can affect your oral health, it’s very important to do all you can to clean and care for your teeth and gums regularly while you grow the little bun in your oven. To do so, it’s best to brush your teeth twice a day, floss your teeth once a day and attend your dental checkups every six months.
